Welcome to the adventurous Fool card. The first card of the tarot deck is all about beginnings. It is the only trump still to be found in a standard deck of playing cards in the form of the Jester. It is fitting that such a happy-go-lucky card has found his feet in both decks. This is part of being the archetypal traveller, open to the path ahead and able to play a variety of roles in the unfolding dramas of life.

This character doesn't own roadmaps. The Fool has an inner compass that drives him to roam where his instincts lead him. When the Fool shows himself in a reading he indicates a desire for exploration. More often than not, this is a desire to see more of the world, though it is not always a geographical drive. If paired with The High Priestess or the Hermit for example, he can indicate an inner journey is calling us onward.

 

He yearns to cast off daily responsibilities and take a break from the heaviness of calculated sense. Instead he wants to immerse himself in new cultural experiences, fresh philosophies and take time out to reconnect with his playfulness.

 

His enthusiasm is contagious and his luck is legendary. He appears to fall on his feet via a variety of timely events that come about easily and spontaneously. For those less inclined to taking risks, he can be perceived as reckless and foolhardy. But he challenges us to take a leap of faith into the unknown. 

 

The Fool is young in mentality because he is free to explore and ever hungry for learning and new things. His keen interest in new and unusual perspectives can attract a wide spectrum of people and experiences into his life. He leads with open curiosity and charm and therefore is very well received in many social and cultural quarters.

 

The card appearing in a reading can indicate a need for change and adventure, and yes, even at the expense of sense or responsibility. This is not going to make him popular with everyone. He can be naïve to the consequences of his actions at times, and has a tendency to move on when things get complicated or require stability. However, it is by jumping to new ground that the Fool is best placed to learn the significance of those lessons. There are times in all our lives, we must heed the inner Fool and be brave. 

 

Only by following our dreams can we appreciate the true nature of social responsibility. In the wider context of our place in the world, exploration is the only means by which we can do this. Like a bird learning to fly, we must risk falling to learn we have wings. Amazing people are awaiting our friendship; amazing places are longing to be explored.

 

This card cares little for the material elements in life and can often indicate a change in perception relating to money or stability. The Fool is happy to take a pay-cut if he knows the pay-off is a return to optimism and discovery.

All the best wayfarers know that travelling light is essential. On the road of life, we must shed the past and live in the changing moment - adaptable and open-minded. The Fool asks you "What exciting exploration do you want to jump towards? What needs leaving behind? What brings you that feeling of being truly alive and full of potential? 

 

So, if this card has come up for you, then it's time to leap into the future, thrilled by what is to come. It's time to connect with the inner child, playful and energised by newness - fuelled by curiosity and imagination.
